EditorÕs Introductory Note:

Thank you to the crew of neighbors who helped out in June at the work party in Halcyon Commons in preparation for next our big National Night Out event in the park (see item 1)! We very much appreciated the refreshments courtesy of Whole Foods Market and coffee courtesy of neighbor Susan Hunter!

What weÕve learned over the years is that the most important thing we can do to foster neighborhood safety on multiple levels is getting to know our neighbors so we can all look out for one another to prevent crime and to provide mutual assistance after a disaster like a big earthquake. Our annual Ice Cream Social offers a way to have fun while building community and enhancing neighborhood safety.

HereÕs to a great summer in the Halcyon neighborhood!

1. Ice Cream Social in the Park for National Night Out

Tuesday, August 6, 6:30-8 p.m.

EditorÕs note: WeÕre anticipating another fun summer evening in the park, with delicious treats, a chance to meet neighbors (the most important ingredient of our neighborhood watch), and visits from police, firefighters, and city officials. This event is a crucial part of our neighborhood watch program, so please mark it on your calendars, bundle up, and come on out!

Homemade Ice Cream courtesy of neighborhood volunteer Bruce Wicinas

Delicious Appetizers, Cake, and Dairy & Nondairy Frozen Desserts courtesy of Whole Foods Market. Children welcome and encouraged to attend!

Volunteers Needed: We need volunteers to help with set-up at 5:45 p.m., to help with serving and sign-up sheets during the event, and to help with cleaning up at 8:00 p.m. This is a great way to meet neighbors and help out in the neighborhood with a minimum investment of your time! Please email halcyon92@gmail.com if youÕre able to pitch in, and weÕll pass your contact information on to our volunteer coordinator Chris Canelake.

2. HNA Disaster Preparedness Plan for Big Earthquakes

EditorÕs note: Given recent earthquakes in Southern and Northern California, this is a good time for a reminder of our neighborhoodÕs plan in case of a big quake here.

Halcyon Neighborhood Association (HNA)

Disaster Preparedness Plan for BIG Earthquakes

A) Household Emergency Preparedness:

1. Make a Family Plan on how to evacuate and where to meet.

2. Choose a Long-Distance Contact for everyone in the household to notify.

3. Collect Family Emergency Supplies to last 5 to 14 Days.

(Include minimum of 1–2 gallon(s) of water per person per day, nonperishable foods, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, flashlights with extra batteries, tools, cash, medications, food for pets, etc.)

4. Prepare Your Home to Survive an Earthquake.

(Install gas shutoff and/or learn to turn off gas and water; secure hazards such as water heater and heavy furniture; retrofit foundation; etc.)

5. Know Your Neighbors and Organize Your Neighborhood (see B).

B) Halcyon Neighborhood Plan following BIG Quake:

1. Each individual to secure personal household.

(Check safety of family; turn off gas if appropriate — i.e., if thereÕs a fire or danger of fire, or if gas is leaking as detected by smell or gas meter moving faster than usual.)

2. Before leaving, indicate that premises are clear.

(Indicate that residents are safe & no one needs immediate help by marking front door of house or individual apartment with a GREEN piece of cloth or GREEN paper or writing with a GREEN pen on paper.)

3. Report to Halcyon Commons park (Halcyon Court at Prince Street).

(Members of the Disaster Supply Cache Team will have opened the Disaster Supply Cache on Halcyon Court & begun setup in the park.)

4. Follow steps outlined in the Disaster Command Binder for setting up an Incident Command System (i.e., batteries in walkie-talkies, set up Halcyon Command Center near picnic table in Halcyon Commons park, etc.).

5. Using instructions in Binder, assign Incident Command System Teams:

            * Communications

            * Light Search & Rescue

            * Disaster First Aid

            * Support/Logistics

            * Fire Suppression

3. Whole Foods Market News: Next Drop-in Progress Meeting Fri., 8/2, 8:15-9:00 a.m.

EditorÕs note: News from Whole Foods Market, courtesy of departing Store Team Leader Hayden Richards (who just moved to New Orleans to manage a Whole Foods Market there). Whole Foods Market generously provides supportive food and beverage donations to our work parties, National Night Out Ice Cream Social, and key HNA CERT events during the year. We greatly appreciate the partnership in taking good care of the neighborhood we share and are happy to welcome new Store Team Leader Kelly Fox!

Next Drop-in Progress Meeting, Friday, August 2, 2019, 8:15-9:00 a.m.

Whole Foods Market (check in at Customer Service)

These meetings are held at the front of the store or outside, and the purpose is to share our plans for ongoing changes in the store, street litter control, and progress on any of the ongoing issues we discuss with HNA reps and nearby neighbors. The Store Team Leader is usually present, and anyone is welcome to join us. Of course there will be complimentary coffee or tea. Our goal is to follow up immediately on any issues that we hear about, and to hear how the store can be a better neighbor. As always, if there are ever any urgent issues, please call the store at 510-649-1333 and ask for the shift manager on duty. We have new shift leaders being trained, so please send an email to the emails below so we can follow up appropriately. Always feel free to swing by too, if youÕd like to have a word with us.
